4 Reasons Why You Should Keep a Media Journal
I don’t know if anyone else can relate to this, but I love to read books and watch films and television series. It’s something that I really enjoy spending time doing as it’s an excuse to be taken away into different worlds and ideas.
Because I love to read and watch a lot of things, I decided to start a media journal back in 2022. Well, truth be told, it was a reading journal that evolved into including films and television shows. This is a journal that I use frequently and I can’t wait to use my new TieFossi notebook as my next media journal as I am getting rather close to finishing my current one.
There may be some of you out there that may be considering starting a journal like this. There may also be those that don’t see the point. Today, I’m going to share some reasons why you should keep a media journal.
It Allows You to Keep Track of Books You Want to Read and Films and Shows You Want to Watch
This is the main reason why I was so desperate to start this type of journal. I wanted to have somewhere to keep track of things I wanted to read and watch without relying on a digital format. In my media journal, I have a massive to be read list which I update frequently. I then have separate to be watched lists for films and television shows, each split into the streaming service they are on.
You Can Keep Track of How Much You’re Reading and Watching Things
I don’t know why but I have always had a fascination with keeping track of the number of things I have done. I like numbers and averages which may contribute to this so keeping track of the amount is something I find interesting. I like to do monthly statistics, looking at average ratings, how many films, books, tv shows I have watched and read etc. It’s an excuse to get creative and digest figures.
It’s An Excuse to Get Creative
I love to get creative and journal. It’s such a therapeutic thing for me to do that really complements my mental health. Having another journal themed to books, films and tv shows allows me to unleash my creativity in the form of decoration that relates to this. I may have bought a fair few stickers related to this journal and using them brings me such joy.
You Start to Look at Books, Films and TV Shows Differently
Ever since I started a media journal, I have always included reviews. I like to talk about what I’ve read and watched. A few years ago, this was simply something along the lines of, ‘this was okay.’ Now that I know I’m going to write about something, I will look at the details closely. I’ll pay attention to set pieces, sound design, the way an author has structured a book. I think being like this has allowed me to be appreciative of what I’m looking at but also allow me to critically form my own opinion.
I hope this has been useful to you and has persuaded you to look at starting a media journal. Let me know if you need any help or guidance!
