Why Washi Tape Is So Diverse to Use in Your Bullet Journal

Having collected a bunch of stationery over the years, I have used all different types. From stickers to notebooks, to pens and decorative papers, I have used a lot but the most diverse to me is washi tape. It’s available in almost every colour, pattern, width and finish imaginable, Now, it's easy to assume that washi tape is simply there to make your pages look pretty. While it certainly does that, it's capable of so much more.

One of the reasons I love washi tape so much is because it's one of the most versatile supplies you can own. Whether you're someone who creates elaborate artistic spreads or prefers a simple, functional planner, there's almost always a way to incorporate washi tape into your journal and today I want to share them with you. Let’s get to it!

It Creates Clean Page Dividers

Instead of drawing lines with a ruler, washi tape can be used to separate different sections of a page. This works particularly well for weekly spreads, habit trackers, finance logs, or maybe even brain dumps where you want distinct areas without making the layout feel cluttered.

It Covers Mistakes

One of the biggest advantages of washi tape is that it can rescue pages that don't quite go to plan. You know when you don't want to start the page again? You can simply place a strip of washi tape over the mistake. You can even leave it as part of the design or even write on top of certain matte washi tapes once they've been applied.

It Can Create Borders and Frames

Adding borders around different photographs, quotes, memories or journal prompts can help them to stand out without needing advanced drawing skills. 

Equally, it can also be used like masking tape to colour in certain sections in a neat and concise way.

It Marks Special Pages

Some people use washi tape along the edge of pages they want to revisit regularly. The exposed edge creates an easy visual guide when flipping through your notebook.

It Encourages Creativity

Sometimes staring at a blank page can feel overwhelming.
Starting with a piece of washi tape can inspire the rest of your layout. You can choose colours that complement it, build a theme around the pattern, or simply use it as the starting point for your design. Equally, even minimal bullet journal spreads can benefit from a small strip of tape that adds just enough visual interest. I find grid washi tape is the perfect style for minimal spreads. 

It's Easy to Remove and Reposition

Unlike many adhesives, washi tape is designed to be repositionable. If you place it slightly wonky—or decide halfway through that it would look better somewhere else—you can often peel it back up and move it without damaging your paper.
That flexibility makes it especially perfect for beginners! 

Washi tape is often seen as a decorative extra, but it's one of the most practical supplies you can add to your bullet journaling collection.
